Comparing job offers properly

The gap between two salaries always looks bigger before tax. Because the extra income is taxed at your marginal rate, most full-time earners keep roughly 55% to 70% of the difference.

Before you decide between two offers, check that you are comparing like with like:

  • Is super included? A $110,000 package including super is a lower base salary than $100,000 plus super. Use the salary package calculator to convert.
  • Hours and leave. A higher salary for longer hours may be a lower hourly rate. The hourly calculator can help.
  • Bonuses and benefits. Bonuses are taxed like salary but are not guaranteed. Salary packaging, extra leave and flexible work have value that will not appear here.
  • Costs. Commuting, parking and relocation can outweigh a modest difference in pay.

Our guide on how to compare two job offers goes through this step by step.
